Remember the Explosion on Route 9 in 1970?

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

By Carol Ann Berry

This story is about my father, Richard Barker formally of 120 North Ave, Natick Mass.

When my parents were married they lost the house they were renting to own off of Route 9 in Natick, Mass there was a furniture store they were the owners of the house that blew up.

At the time of the explosion; the company that was hired to put tress in around the house were digging a trench and ended up hitting a gas line and knew it and started running the opposite direction.

My mom Janice around 21 to 22 at the time was pregnant and very sensitive to the gas that she smelled and ended up going out the front door saw the contractor running and yelled, "hey, I smell gas"; he must have felt guilty or didn't realize that anyone was home and saw that she was pregnant and told her to "get out of the house!"

She was going to go down the basement to get our family cat and realized that there isn't enough time; she grabbed me wrapped me up in a blanket and ran and ended up jumping over the huge trench and almost fell backwards...

just as she made it; the house blew from the basement about 30 feet in the air and the only thing that stood up to the explosion were the front door and the mail box.

Settlement Stolen From Richard Barket & Charles Prombain, ESQ.

The reason I am writing this is because no one seemed to have any answers for me while I was growing up as to why the attorney for my parents took off with the settlement money and no one did nothing about it? That is inexcusable!

I found the attorney down in Palm Beach Florida; unfortunately his wife answered the phone and said that he passed away. How can this have happened and no one did anything about it? I have been trying to find answers and can't seem to get anywhere.

I know that the statute of limitations has run out but I would like to know if my dad had part in this, and MAYBE hid the monies from the settlement and over time spent his share. He left my mom with kids and no where to go and he never paid child support and didn't care about us. We lived in the High Street projects and Egmont Street projects because we had no where to go.

If anyone remembers the story or has information please comment on this story. Thank you for your consideration in assisting me in any way that you can. This has been haunting me for years...

I know that one of my parents would have had to sign the settlement agreement and have to know that the attorney wasn't or shouldn't have been the one that was the payee... Please help me????

Natick High School Class of 1990 25th Reunion
It's time for 25! Remember when Bill Cosby portrayed a virtuous obstetrician on the #1 TV show in America, "big hair" caused a hole in the ozone layer, and Al Gore hadn’t yet invented the internet?  That was our time in high school. Take a break from your family and work responsibilities to reconnect with your fellow Natick High Redmen/Redhawks.  Join your classmates for a fun evening recounting stories from our awkward adolescence!  We'll have a private function room with heavy hors d'oeuvres, cash bar, and a good sense of humor at the Dolphin Restaurant right in Natick Center.   Tickets must be purchased online in advance - there will be no cash tickets at the door.  Tickets are $30 when purchased by November 20th (that's when we have to provide numbers to the restaurant), and $45 after that date.   Whether your style was the Farrah Fawcett, the Mullett, or the High Top Fade, we want to see you there. Please spread the word to any and all classmates - we don't have a full list of contacts - and encourage them to buy tickets.  Significant others are welcome to attend, as long as they don't mind hearing about your unfortunate 1980s wardrobe. We need volunteers to help decorate or check in classmates.  Please let us know if you can help. Sincerely, Raymond Coakley, Committee Chairman

Deborah Henson-Conant's 5th Annual 'Lose your BLUES!' Show
A woman singing the Blues isn't so unusual. But this woman plays the harp when she sings. The electric harp. And she straps it on and glides across the stage with it.

It's not your Grandmother's harp, that's for sure. It's a custom-built carbon-fibre instrument stripped down, futuristic. She wears it like Aladdin rode his magic carpet, as a vehicle into another world. A world with sounds you never thought you'd hear coming from a harp: Latin rhythms, Blues riffs, Flamenco strums. A world with stories about ordinary people discovering extraordinary depth inside themselves.

What kind of woman does THAT?

That woman is Deborah Henson-Conant (DHC) - a GRAMMY-Nominated electric harp virtuoso with a wicked sense of humor, a gutsy set of vocal cords and theatrical flair - and there's a reason she always plays a "Lose Your Blues" show in the dark days of early January.

The lead-up to the Holidays is intense - then it all deflates in the cold days of the new year when the Blues hit you hard. That's why every January DHC brings her "Lose your Blues" show to the Boston area.

One of the most inventive humans you'll ever meet brings the instrument she created to give you the adventure of a lifetime into the world of her musical imagination. She invented the instrument, then took it to the CAMAC Harp company in France, where it became the "DHC-Light" the world's top-selling electric harp.

So what does she do with it??

She strides on stage like a rock-star. She sings. She pulls melody, chords, bass lines, percussion and rhythms from her 32 strings, loops them in real-time with a looper pedal, creating soundscapes and rhythmic grooves she improvises over. She uses spoken word and story to riff over the music 'til you can't tell where the speaking stops and the music starts.

When you leave the show you know you've experienced something you never even imagined - and it was funny, deep, impressive, inspiring - unforgettable.

Think Differently: A New Approach for Parenting, Teaching and Treating Children with Behavioral Challenges
Think Differently: A New Approach for Parenting, Teaching and Treating Children with Behavioral Challenges Sponsored by the Natick Public Schools Wilson Middle School â-Ź 22 Rutledge Rd â-Ź Natick, MA Monday, November 30th, 2015 â-ŹÂ Â 8:30 A.M. - 4:00 P.M.   OVERVIEW Think:Kids, a program in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), has partnered with Principal Kirk Downing of Brown Elementary and the Natick Public Schools to offer a one-day training program featuring Dr. Stuart Ablon. This one-day introductory training provides a foundation for professionals and parents interested in learning the evidence-based approach to understanding and helping children and adolescents with behavioral challenges called Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS). This training serves as the prerequisite for our professional intensive training seminars (Tier 1 and Tier 2).  The CPS approach provides a new way of understanding and helping kids who struggle with behavioral challenges. Challenging behavior has traditionally been thought of as willful and goal oriented which has led to approaches that focus on motivating better behavior using reward and punishment programs. If youâ??ve tried these strategies and they havenâ??t worked, this workshop is for you! At Think:Kids we have some very different ideas about why these kids struggle. Research over the past 30 years demonstrates that for the majority of these kids their challenges result from a lack of crucial thinking skills when it comes to things like problem solving, frustration tolerance and flexibility. The CPS approach, therefore, focuses on helping adults teach the skills these children lack while resolving the chronic problems that tend to precipitate challenging behavior. Through lecture, videos, case examples and role plays this one-day training will help you shift your thinking and approach to foster positive relationships with these children and encourage growth in areas of self-regulation, communication and problem solving.  PRESENTER J. Stuart Ablon, Ph.D., is the Director of Think:Kids in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is also Associate Clinical Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Ablon co-founded the Center for Collaborative Problem Solving where he also served as Co-Director from its inception until 2008. Dr. Ablon is co-author of Treating Explosive Kids: The Collaborative Problem Solving Approach and author of numerous articles, chapters and scientific paperson the process and outcome of psychosocial interventions. A dynamic and engaging speaker, Dr. Ablon was recently ranked #5 on the list of the world's top rated keynote speakers in the academic arena. Dr. Ablon's research has been funded by, amongst others, the National Institute of Health, the American Psychological Association, the American Psychoanalytic Association, the International Psychoanalytic Association, the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Institute, and the Endowment for the Advancement of Psychotherapy. Dr. Ablon received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of California at Berkeley and completed his predoctoral and postdoctoral training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Violet Jam Presents: Vertical Horizon
Vertical Horizon released their breakout album, Everything You Want in 1999, which went on to sell more than two million copies. The second single off the CD, the title track “Everything You Want,” captured the #1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 and Adult Top 40 charts, and became Billboard’s Most Played Single of 2000. Having carved out a page in the annals of music history the band garnered further radio attention with “You’re a God” (#4 on Billboard’s Adult Chart) and “Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning).” In 2005, “Best I Ever Had” became a top 20 country hit for country star Gary Allan. Their follow-up album, Go, was released in 2003 and solidified the band as a no-nonsense pop rock entity. Eventually, the band took a hiatus to pursue individual interests. In 2007, feeling the time was right to start working on a new album, Matt began composing the songs which would eventually become Burning the Days. The album was released in 2009 on Vertical Horizon’s own label, Outfall Records. One of the songs, “Even Now,” was co-written by Scannell with his close friend Neil Peart, the much-heralded drummer from Rush. Peart played drums on that song as well as two other tracks on the record.  Burning the Days was critically acclaimed and produced two Hot AC radio singles, “Save Me from Myself” and “The Lucky One.” In addition to writing and producing songs for Vertical Horizon, Matt has spent the past few years writing songs with and for other artists.  In 2010 he wrote “Wish You Were Here” for the band Hey Monday, featuring lead singer Cassadee Pope, who went on to win season 3 of NBC’s hit show The Voice. In 2012 Scannell teamed up with Daniel Powter to write “Come Back Home,” which was used to promote NBC’s “Chicago Fire.” Scannell and Grammy-winning songwriter/producer Richard Marx collaborate often and sometimes play acoustic duo shows together. They co-wrote Marx’s 2012 AC hit “When You Loved Me,” which reached number 15 on the Adult Contemporary Chart. In the fall of 2013 Vertical Horizon released their latest album, Echoes From The Underground. The band will be at The VERVE-Crowne Plaza's Violet Jam, playing all their greatest hits and new material. This is a 21+ event. Must have proper ID.

Organic Lawn Care Training
This is a one-day course, from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. The premise of the course is that a healthy organically maintained turf is more resilient, more drought-tolerant and more resistant to pest infestations than chemically maintained lawns. Our instructor, Chip Osborne, will discuss in detail how to measure, develop and maintain healthy soil biology, how to maintain proper fertilization levels for optimum growth and plant health, how cultural practices should be altered for organic turf, and how to address specific pest problems using least-toxic pesticides. This will be taught so that attendees will gain a full understanding of the basic concepts of organic turf management and how these practices integrate with people and the environment here in Natick and the Metrowest Community. MA Pesticide, MCLP, and NOFA continuing education credits are pending for the workshop.
