Remember the Explosion on Route 9 in 1970?

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

By Carol Ann Berry
Contributor

This story is about my father, Richard Barker formally of 120 North Ave, Natick Mass.

When my parents were married they lost the house they were renting to own off of Route 9 in Natick, Mass there was a furniture store they were the owners of the house that blew up.

At the time of the explosion; the company that was hired to put tress in around the house were digging a trench and ended up hitting a gas line and knew it and started running the opposite direction.

My mom Janice around 21 to 22 at the time was pregnant and very sensitive to the gas that she smelled and ended up going out the front door saw the contractor running and yelled, "hey, I smell gas"; he must have felt guilty or didn't realize that anyone was home and saw that she was pregnant and told her to "get out of the house!"

She was going to go down the basement to get our family cat and realized that there isn't enough time; she grabbed me wrapped me up in a blanket and ran and ended up jumping over the huge trench and almost fell backwards...

just as she made it; the house blew from the basement about 30 feet in the air and the only thing that stood up to the explosion were the front door and the mail box.

Settlement Stolen From Richard Barket & Charles Prombain, ESQ.

The reason I am writing this is because no one seemed to have any answers for me while I was growing up as to why the attorney for my parents took off with the settlement money and no one did nothing about it? That is inexcusable!

I found the attorney down in Palm Beach Florida; unfortunately his wife answered the phone and said that he passed away. How can this have happened and no one did anything about it? I have been trying to find answers and can't seem to get anywhere.

I know that the statute of limitations has run out but I would like to know if my dad had part in this, and MAYBE hid the monies from the settlement and over time spent his share. He left my mom with kids and no where to go and he never paid child support and didn't care about us. We lived in the High Street projects and Egmont Street projects because we had no where to go.

If anyone remembers the story or has information please comment on this story. Thank you for your consideration in assisting me in any way that you can. This has been haunting me for years...

I know that one of my parents would have had to sign the settlement agreement and have to know that the attorney wasn't or shouldn't have been the one that was the payee... Please help me????

Think Differently: A New Approach for Parenting, Teaching and Treating Children with Behavioral Challenges

Think Differently: A New Approach for Parenting, Teaching and Treating Children with Behavioral Challenges

Sponsored by the Natick Public Schools

Morse Institute Library ?-? 14 East Central St. ?-? Boston, MA

Friday, April 10th, 2015?-? 8:30 A.M. - 4:00 P.M.

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

Think:Kids, a program in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), has partnered with Principal Kirk Downing of Brown Elementary and the Natick Public Schools to offer a one-day training program featuring Dr. Larry Epstein. This one-day introductory training provides a foundation for professionals and parents interested in learning the evidence-based approach to understanding and helping children and adolescents with behavioral challenges called Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS). This training serves as the prerequisite for our professional intensive training seminars (Tier 1 and Tier 2).

The CPS approach provides a new way of understanding and helping kids who struggle with behavioral challenges. Challenging behavior has traditionally been thought of as willful and goal oriented which has led to approaches that focus on motivating better behavior using reward and punishment programs. If you’ve tried these strategies and they haven’t worked, this workshop is for you! At Think:Kids we have some very different ideas about why these kids struggle. Research over the past 30 years demonstrates that for the majority of these kids their challenges result from a lack of crucial thinking skills when it comes to things like problem solving, frustration tolerance and flexibility. The CPS approach, therefore, focuses on helping adults teach the skills these children lack while resolving the chronic problems that tend to precipitate challenging behavior. Through lecture, videos, case examples and role plays this one-day training will help you shift your thinking and approach to foster positive relationships with these children and encourage growth in areas of self-regulation, communication and problem solving.

WORKSHOP PRESENTER

Dr. Larry Epstein is Director of School-Based Services at Think:Kids, Assistant in Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and Clinical Instructor in Psychology the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Epstein has extensive experience utilizing and teaching the Collaborative Problem Solving across a variety of settings including educational and clinical programs and outpatient practice. For 17 years before joining Think:Kids, Dr. Epstein worked for the Cherry Creek School District in Denver, Colorado during which time he helped develop the district’s intensive treatment program for students with significant behavioral challenges. He is also a nationally certified bullying prevention trainer and helped found the non-profit organization Creating Caring Communities.

Dr. Epstein received his Ph.D. in Child Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver and completed his internship at The Children's Hospital in Denver, Colorado.

A Stronger Workforce: Leveraging State Funding to Invest in Your Staff, Metrowest

A Stronger Workforce: Leveraging State Funding to Invest in Your Staff

Generously hosted by the Metrowest Nonprofit Network

Join the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network to learn about ways that your organization can support and develop its employees through the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund Program: a statewide program that provides employers in the Commonwealth with funding to train and develop their employees.

At last year’s regional meetings, the need for training and professional development in the sector continuously rose to the top of the list as a primary concern among 300+ nonprofit leaders. To address this feedback, these interactive and informative meetings will provide an overview of the features and benefits of each of the Workforce Training Fund Grant programs, the amount of available funding, and how to apply for the grants. After the overview, attendees will participate in a facilitated conversation to identify and address professional development needs across the nonprofit sector to ensure we have a strong pipeline of nonprofit leaders.

The regional meetings will be most beneficial for senior leaders and human resource professionals in the nonprofit sector whose organizations are eligible for the Workforce Training Fund. Click here to find out if you are eligible. However, representatives from all organizations are welcome to attend as there will also be a broader discussion on training needs and opportunities across the entire sector.
