Remember the Explosion on Route 9 in 1970?

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

By Carol Ann Berry
Contributor

This story is about my father, Richard Barker formally of 120 North Ave, Natick Mass.

When my parents were married they lost the house they were renting to own off of Route 9 in Natick, Mass there was a furniture store they were the owners of the house that blew up.

At the time of the explosion; the company that was hired to put tress in around the house were digging a trench and ended up hitting a gas line and knew it and started running the opposite direction.

My mom Janice around 21 to 22 at the time was pregnant and very sensitive to the gas that she smelled and ended up going out the front door saw the contractor running and yelled, "hey, I smell gas"; he must have felt guilty or didn't realize that anyone was home and saw that she was pregnant and told her to "get out of the house!"

She was going to go down the basement to get our family cat and realized that there isn't enough time; she grabbed me wrapped me up in a blanket and ran and ended up jumping over the huge trench and almost fell backwards...

just as she made it; the house blew from the basement about 30 feet in the air and the only thing that stood up to the explosion were the front door and the mail box.

Settlement Stolen From Richard Barket & Charles Prombain, ESQ.

The reason I am writing this is because no one seemed to have any answers for me while I was growing up as to why the attorney for my parents took off with the settlement money and no one did nothing about it? That is inexcusable!

I found the attorney down in Palm Beach Florida; unfortunately his wife answered the phone and said that he passed away. How can this have happened and no one did anything about it? I have been trying to find answers and can't seem to get anywhere.

I know that the statute of limitations has run out but I would like to know if my dad had part in this, and MAYBE hid the monies from the settlement and over time spent his share. He left my mom with kids and no where to go and he never paid child support and didn't care about us. We lived in the High Street projects and Egmont Street projects because we had no where to go.

If anyone remembers the story or has information please comment on this story. Thank you for your consideration in assisting me in any way that you can. This has been haunting me for years...

I know that one of my parents would have had to sign the settlement agreement and have to know that the attorney wasn't or shouldn't have been the one that was the payee... Please help me????

About the Instructor: Aaron Englander, originally from Concord, MA, managed a diversified vegetable farm in Oberlin, Ohio for several years before travelling to Hawaii in 2010 to learn about Korean Natural Farming (KNF). Aaron gained a thorough understanding of the practices and philosophies of KNF from an intensive workshop led by Master Han Kyu Cho, originator of KNF, and by working on a polyculture fruit farm in Hilo, Hawaii which implements KNF techniques. Since returning to the Northeast in 2011, Aaron has continued to practice and teach KNF at farms in OH, VT, MA, and ME. Aaron recently finished a M.S. at the University of Maine where he was researching one of the KNF inputs, the Indigenous Microorganism Inoculant (IMO) in controlled field and greenhouse trials. Currently Aaron is the farm and program manager at Erickson Fields Preserve in Rockport, an educational farm run by the Maine Coast Heritage trust.
